"What I Did On My Summer Vacation"....

I see the last post dated one month ago...wow. I'm already back to work in the classroom, making it a bright, happy place of learning. There are teacher's meetings next week, and first day of school is September 4th. So, I'm sending off a quick photo post, and hoping for more to come later. :-}

Leanna's blue and white embroidery quilt: quilted, bound, washed and crinkly! It was returned to her without a photo :-\ I'm hoping to borrow back for a class share next month, and take a picture then ~

This was my only visit to the Long Beach International Quilt Festival ever, "only" because next year it is moving to another state. But, I can say I was able to go! Notice the quilts that inspire me have Color, and great prints ~

I love these bright, happy hearts ~

The sewing room is still slow going...what excuse is there...I guess it's not as inspiring to me as creating is. So, there's the truth for you, and I'm moving on...!

There are about one hundred 3 inch spools here from Bonnie Hunter's pattern,
all scrappy, sewn into 4 patch blocks.
Hope to get them sashed together for a lap sized quilt ~

My second shirt this summer, it still needs buttons and then it's ready to go ~

I love puzzles of all kinds. Does any one else look at quilting as a puzzle solving activity? This Ipad is probably a reason the sewing room isn't done, since it seems to find it's way into my hands daily for blog reading and reading, too. So far, I've read 6 books this summer, including the Hunger Games series. I'm on Odd Thomas right now. I have access to Lydia's Nook library, and Jeff's Kindle Library through apps they put on for me. This Ipad is really for my class, not mine, but I have enjoyed the access to it this summer!

This is a rug loom from Country Threads. I ordered the loom, book and DVD for my birthday in July, started tearing my lesser favorite fabric, and the first rug is just about done as you can see. So far I'm figuring about 7-8 yards of fabric for a rug! I want to make a tshirt rug, too. Weaving has been a nice activity, and less hard on my hands than crocheting rag strips.

The quilt on the frame is a pretty batik Friendship braid, and has me humming You Can Quilt That Out.  It is on the bias and quite ripply... I now know why my client through her hands up in the air as she gave it to me and said to do whatever I wanted to, lol ~

We have been swimming 1-2 times a week with Beth and Jerry, Larry took 1 day a week mini vacation days and we enjoyed each other's company in their pool, or reading, sewing, R&R days for true!

Now, it's back to typing class lists, filling out calendars, pulling book sets, running off papers and returning to the school days of life. What do you bet I will find time to post better, back on a regular routine? :-}hugs!

Happy Quilting ~

  4. Pokey you have been busy with a fun summer it seems! Love all the color at the Long Beach Quilt Festival. I say your sewing room looks pretty normal to me. Looking forward to seeing that Little Spools lap quilt.

I know what you mean about the IPad. I have a Kindle and spend way too much time playing "Words with Friends" and reading etc when I should be sleeping! It's always....just one more game.....

Weaving looks like fun. Haven't ever tried that one yet.

Funny....you are heading back to work and we are slowing down....finally! We've been working 6 am to 6 or 7 pm trying to fit in all those people who need their wisdom teeth out. Now that school has started we have slowed back down to regular 8 to 5 days and it feels so good.

Glad to hear you and Larry got to take a little R&R.

  6. Wow! Pokey you have accomplished a lot this summer! Enjoyed listening to "You Can Quilt That Out!! LOL! I did hear those braid quilts were stretchy! Yours is so bright and cheery! I did a little quilting out on a quilt I just finished FMQ. I love the Bonnie Hunter spools! Can't wait to see the finished quilt.

  9. Pokey that first blue quilt is simply stunning! I worked at school a good bit over the last couple of weeks but I think, I hope, that they are about through with me and I will be able to stay home again. It was a good year returning to school last year but now I'm ready for re-retirement. :) blessings, marlene

  10. I'm with you--I love lots of color! Just don't know if I could do a large "low volume", aka bland, quilt! I appreciate that some people love them, but they are just too boring for me. lol Summer has been really short, hasn't it?

  11. Sounds like a lovely summer. And now as you get those class lists and books sets together, I'm thinking of my DDIL who is doing same (5th gr). Start of the school year was always such an exciting time when my kids were at home. I hope you have a good year with a great class. And time for yourself to do a bit of quilting now and then.

  12. You've been busy with lots of fun stuff! Love those spools. That shirt fabric is gorgeous (says this plaid aficionado). Interesting rug loom! Looks like it's coming along nicely too. Good luck in the new school year!

  15. I'd say your summer was full. From this post anyway, it looks like you accomplished a lot! All those three-inch spool blocks... I'd be sick of them by now, if they were mine. Your rug loom is really interesting. I've never seen anything like that. Oh, and let me know if that quilt actually "quilts out." I've never heard of anyone having success with those attempts. Usually, it's a good lesson-learned by the top-maker, while the quilter pulls her hair out. Hope the start of school goes smoothly, and that you find a routine quickly so as to get back to creating too.

  16. I was really sorry to have missed the L.B. Quilt Show this year knowing it was the last year here. It looks like there was a lot of inspiration to be had.

The spools are gorgeous and will look spectacular in a quilt.

The weaving is awesome. I'll bet a t-shirt one would be so soft too. Meanwhile, have fun quilting that bias and playing on the i-pad.

  17. Beautiful quilts you are showing , I love colour too .
I keep my fabric mainly in the garage and it can get untidy but that surely must mean it is regularly being rooted through .
Yes , the vinegar did help on the wasp sting but only temporarily.
Love your rag rug .Besides my quilting I like felt making
